Bond Constraint Parameters
The exhibition Monitoring from the 41st Kassel Documentary Film and Video Festival presents 17 media installations and performative works by international artists under the title ‘Bond Constraint Parameters’. The exhibition venues are Kasseler Kunstverein and KulturBahnhof Kassel.
In a figurative sense, the title ‘Bond Constraint Parameters’ stands for the unspoken rules and conditions that define our relationships with other people, things or their surroundings. They are the factors that determine the strength, flexibility and limits of these bonds - be it in interpersonal relationships, for membership of social groups or in emotional entanglements. As in a physical system in which certain parameters restrict freedom of movement, social norms, expectations, personal fears or past experiences also act as limitations in our bonds.
The exhibited artists shed light on various dimensions of bonds in relationships - from familial connections to social and ecological interdependencies. The perspectives alternate between individual experiences and collective structures. It is about exclusion, belonging, fixed role models and the desire for alternative forms of coexistence that are free from dominance.
Belonging is thematised in different ways in the 17 works in the exhibition: as an intimate feeling of social embeddedness, as a political resource that shapes inclusion and exclusion, and as an affective relationship to places. The works at the Kulturbahnhof focus on personal spaces of experience such as family contexts or clubs and cruising areas and place them in a social context that raises questions about reproductive labour, discrimination and inequality. At the Kasseler Kunstverein, the works focus on the relationship between people and their environment by locating memories, traumas and longings in landscapes. For example, the artists examine political conflicts and violence that are reflected in the landscapes along the Mekong River, or visualise traces of migrants from the Sahel to North Africa and Tunisia.
The artists use a variety of strategies to reveal the stories and narratives inscribed and hidden in bodies, landscapes and objects. The focus is on marginalised perspectives and experiences of people whose voices are often ignored. In doing so, they point to the hegemonic structures of listening, which are closely linked to representation, belonging and power.
Monitoring takes place in co-operation with Kasseler Kunstverein and Stellwerk. All 17 works on display have been nominated for the Golden Cube, endowed with 3,500 euros and donated by the Kassel-based software company Micromata GmbH.
